India

As Seen Through My Eyes

My friends who go abroad and come back tell me many stories about how the roads are so clean in Singapore, about how everything is so neat and punctual in Japan, who it's wild fun in Australia, how interesting people are in Africa, how rich life is in Dubai, how cold it is in Russia, what freedom in France or the excellent technology in Germany, how there is so much space and resources in America and how everything is so fine everywhere else but India. I agree. But yet all these travellers go around the world and love to relax and cool their heels and breathe the air of freedom in dear Mother India.
To someone who gave me the greatest gift of life in the land of spiritual fragrance and the wisdom of freedom, this is my offering.

India That Is

India - the mighty nation -
From Kashmir to Kanyakumari
Every bit of her land breathes spirituality.
The beautious hills of Kashmir
The wheat fields of Punjab
The expansive green plains of
Uttar Pradesh, where the Ganga
Showers her bounty
The wise people of Bengal
Monks and monasteries of Bihar
The sun that rises
Behind the hills on Arunachal Pradesh
The Arabian coasts of
Gujarat and Maharashtra
God's beautiful land
Down Kerala and golden Karnataka
Picturesque Orissa and
Effervescent Andhra Pradesh
Vibrant Tamil Nadu
With her gracious hospitality
A Madhya Pradesh in the centre
And so many more members has she
She speaks many tongues
and many customs and cultures has she
She is a beautiful woman
A mother welling with compassion
A lot of hungry mouths to feed
Nevertheless she cares
For the whole world.
She breathes in love
And exhales spiritual power
No army can conquer
No enemy can hurt
No mightier power ever destroy
Her loving territory
She welcomes warmly
The guests who seek her
When the world is in distress
She rushes for help
With comforting arms
And strong shoulders
My India stands
A symbol of strength
Her love for the Universe
Is the source of her energy.
Like the tree that bends
To let the wind pass by
She has weathered many an invasive storm
Only to stand up to the world
And exclaim aloud
Fear not, I am with thee.

(And for those who are doubtful about the truth of all this, can count one person in the whole billion, who has experienced and expressed this truth - Myself. I stand testimony.)

Swahilya.

Appeciating the foreign countries
is not depreciating ones own country. many times many people tend to apppreciate the phoren countries just outof anguish that their own motherland has not seen such abundance or wealth etc yet.
when indian rupees is not valid
in indian airport, then dollars seem to fascinate ppl. what to do?
one become more aware of ones own country's strength or shortcoming
only when he/she travel outside the motherland. But the patriotism of a 'frog in the well' can be very inadequate compared to the patriotism of a globe trotter...

hey,
liked the poem of urs. i agree that India is best to us. It is our home, our identity. Im mad about my country.i cant stand some one say that country is fine, why is mine like this. instead, why nt do ur bit of work to better it.
Visiting other countries and gaining knowledge is fine. so long that u dont fling mud at ur country and its people. if then, ur flinging dirt on urself as u r part of the country. partly responsible for it is today.
hope u agree.

Hi Swahilya,

I too fully believe in this truth and I am very much there with you in this subject.

I agree many foreign countries are great in terms of amenities, cleanliness and human values, but that is all because of the people of that country and not a trait of the country itself.

Hello warlord,

Please do not use the word country's strength or shortcoming. A country gains its strength or weakness because of its citizens. So whatever you see in your country is a reflection of your own personality.

And I have seen Indian Globe trotters become patriotic only when they are put to racial discrimination or face calamities and harassment abroad and not otherwise.

An Indian in Singapore would keep a soiled tissue in his pocket and search for a dustbin and throw it there and he would never dare to spit in whole of his stay there, whereas the moment he is in India the same tissue would be in the middle of the road and he would get the urge of nature's call only when he steps out of his home.

So who is responsible for India's shortcoming Warlord.

Yes Warlord: I agree with you on the smallness of the patriotism of the frog in the well compared to the patriotism of a globe trotter. If I am well endowed with the finances to globe trot, then I am ready to go globe trotting. But the India of my vision is not confined to any political or geographical boundary. It is the whole Universe.

Lakshmi,
You are right to a great extent. But the best way is to realise one's own strength. A strong personality gives the wisdom to accept one's weakness and make the necessary corrections. Just imagine a one billion population with this drive, strength and courage!

Hari,
The people make the mind of the country. So the people of the country and the trait of that country are not two different things. Of course, the traits and qualities are moulded by so many factors like environment, history and most importantly age of the civilisation.

On the heated exchange between Hari and Warlord: I am able to visualise the battlefield, with Warlord in battlegear, steel helmet with horns, a chest plate, shield and spear - I am getting a rather Viking like image, with steel clothes and boots and on the other fence Hari with a lance, and not much protection on himself. Watch out! or rather come on cool it down!
